Ruben Navasardyan
Ruben is specializing in Mathematics in the Faculty of Arts & Science. He had the opportunity to participate in the Summer Research Exchange Program at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels, Belgium. Studying minimal surfaces of revolution, an area of differential geometry, he derived and solved the differential equations that represent the vanishing mean curvature equations of surfaces in 2 and 3 dimensions in Minkowski hyperbolic spaces.
Through the experience, Ruben learned perspective and the connections with different areas of mathematics. “I was astounded by how interconnected a lot of the seemingly unrelated areas of math are with each other,” he shared, “and that sometimes, you need to be able to walk out of the box to look at the bigger picture to see results that otherwise would’ve been missed.” Indeed, these interconnections with different areas of math taught Ruben just how important it is to collaborate. Through weekly seminars, Ruben had the opportunity to meet and talk with other faculty as well as learn from the invited guest speakers who came from other institutions across Europe.
Ruben so enjoyed his international experience conducting theoretical research at ULB, that he applied and got accepted to study at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland for the upcoming term.
